Day Two

Day two begins...

Last night was one of the most peaceful camp nights we have ever experienced - no knocks on the doors, no tears and quiet cabins filled with sleeping children.  Our adventure continues...

  • Electoral Education Centre - learning to vote
  • Government House - will we see Quentin Bryce?
  • Parliament House - we meet Senator Claire Moore
  • CSIRO Discovery - time to be scientists
  •
-->
Today was  a very busy one, involving  a lot of information gathering.  The children showed off their knowledge by answering the questions fired at them by our various guides.  The children found it difficult to pinpoint a favourite activity for the day because they enjoyed it all.

On top of Parliament House

First up, we went to the Educational Electoral Centre where we saw fantastic videos, which taught us about the history of voting in Australia.  We had a great day at Parliament House.  My favourite thing today was going up on top of Parliament House.  (Maddy W)

Electoral Education Centre
My favourite thing about today was watching a real session in progress in the House of Representatives.  (Andrea)
Visiting the Governor General’s house was wonderful because it was massive inside.  It was filled with all sorts of lovely furniture; one piece, which was interesting, was a jewellery cabinet.  It was made from 10 different types of Australian wood.  Not only that, it had 56 different little drawers.  It took the creator 18 months to carve.  (James)

I enjoyed watching Question Time at Parliament House and listening to the speeches, which were timed.  The Governor General’s house was magnificent.  We saw an example of a dinner table setting.  My favourite thing was the cabinet filled with examples of  the different Australian service medals.  (Rhys)
Voting
In the GG's residence

The dinner table in the Governor General’s house was really long and could potentially seat 54 guests.  The crockery was Wedgewood, decorated in 24 carat gold.  On every item in the setting displayed a crown representing the Queen.  When the setting in correctly positioned, the crown faces the guest.  (Sophie)

Voting Officials
The Governor General’s house was my favourite, especially the dining room, because I got to sit in the exact spot where the Queen sat when she visited Quentin Bryce.  (Madeline)

I loved looking at the beautiful expensive furniture in the Governor General’s house.  At the Electoral Education Centre, we role played passing a voting session and I was one of the voting officials.  (Izzy)
Chillin' in the GG's Rolls Royce

The Governor General’s house was absolutely awesome inside.  I also enjoyed observing the members debating issues during question time at the House of Representatives.  (Lydia)

Clerk Keely
The role-play at Parliament House was my favourite activity because I got to play the role of the clerk while we role played passing a bill.  I also enjoyed watching the question time in the House of Representatives.  (Keely)

Playing the role of a Shadow Minister at Parliament House was my favourite activity of the day because I got to argue against a bill.  When we finally went up to the top of Parliament House we had the most magnificent view and there was a great photo spot.  (Olivia P)

  10. Hi Seb,
Wow mate! 3 times to Canberra in under 3 months, I don't even think many of the politicians would visit Canberra that often.

Anymore more visits to Canberra and they'll start to think you'r a local.

At least if the bus driver gets lost you maybe able to give him or her some directions, after all it was only 2 weeks ago that you helped direct me to Canberra Stadium and the Institute Of Sport.

It's great to read how things have been going and it sounds like you're all having a fabulous time.

I hope the teachers are also having a great time and you kids are making it easy for them to enjoy the trip as well. (I'm sure you all are)

Laura says hi and said to tell you she ended up winning all 4 stages of the Toowoombe Junior Tour on the weekend.

I will say the silence is defining without your incessant teasing of Laura, I even think Laura is a little lost without it.
Only joking, she now thinks she's King Pin and has already moved in on your favourite position in front of the T.V. Good luck trying to get it back mate!

Keep the posts coming and have a great time.

    Lots of Love

    Dad, Mum and Laura xxx

  44. Sophie, When I worked in Qld Parliament House they had a similar Wedgewood setting. I actually broke a cup while returning it to its special cabinet. I was threatened with having the money taken out of my pay to replace it. Thank goodness it was only a threat. Sounds like you had a wonderful time.
